BYD Sealion 08: Ocean Flagship SUV Debuts at Beijing Auto Show

BYD's three-row Ocean flagship arrives with Blade Battery 2.0, 480+ kW, and over 1,000 km electric range. Full debut at Auto China 2026 on April 24.

BYD Sealion 08: Ocean Flagship SUV Debuts at Beijing Auto Show

BYD is heading into the Beijing Auto Show with its most ambitious Ocean Network entry yet. The Sealion 08, a three-row flagship SUV that has been in the works since late 2025, will make its world debut on April 24 — and based on what BYD has already confirmed, it's a direct challenge to premium segment SUVs from both domestic and international rivals.

⚡ A Flagship Built Around Flash Charging

The Sealion 08 sits above everything else in BYD's Ocean series. At over 5,000 mm long with a wheelbase exceeding 3,000 mm, it occupies the same footprint as large three-row SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 — but with radically different technology under the hood.

Both DM-i plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants are on the table. The electric version uses BYD's second-generation Blade Battery with what the company calls flash charging: a partial charge in roughly five minutes, full charge in about nine, or twelve minutes in cold conditions. Pure electric range is expected to exceed 1,000 km under CLTC conditions — a figure that would place it comfortably at the top of the segment.

The all-wheel-drive configuration puts out over 480 kW (644 hp) combined, with a 0–100 km/h time under five seconds. For a three-row family SUV, that's a statement.

🔧 DiSus-A Suspension Meets Roof-Mounted LiDAR

BYD didn't just throw a large battery in a big shell. The Sealion 08 carries the DiSus-A adaptive air suspension system — the same unit found in the Denza D9 MPV — with dual-chamber design and road preview capability. That means the suspension reads the road surface ahead and adjusts damping proactively, rather than reacting after the fact.

Rear-wheel steering improves low-speed maneuverability, which matters in a vehicle this long. A roof-mounted LiDAR unit handles the perception stack for the assisted driving system, while hidden door handles and Ocean Aesthetics lighting round out the exterior.

The interior is configured in three rows with enough space for six or seven passengers depending on the variant.

Pricing and Context

BYD has not confirmed official pricing ahead of the Beijing debut, but estimates from industry sources point to a range between 210,000 and 230,000 yuan ($30,400–$33,300 USD), with fully loaded versions potentially approaching 250,000 yuan ($36,200 USD).

That positions the Sealion 08 directly against the Li Auto L9, the Aito M9, and the NIO ES8 — all of which sell in similar territory. What BYD brings to this fight is the second-gen Blade Battery, flash charging at a scale no competitor currently matches, and a price point that undercuts many of the vehicles it targets on spec sheets.

The Sealion 08 is also the second flagship from BYD's Ocean series. The Seal 08 sedan debuted in March with a 1,000 km range target and Blade Battery 2.0. The SUV follows the same logic: take the brand's most mature technology, put it in a body that the Chinese market actually buys in volume, and price it sharply enough to force a response.

Auto China 2026 Sets the Stage

The timing is deliberate. Auto China 2026 opens its press days on April 24 at the China International Exhibition Center in Shunyi — the same venue where BYD has consistently used major shows to announce products that reshape expectations.

The Sealion 08 won't be the only flagship three-row EV at Beijing this year, but it might be the one with the most complete powertrain story. Full specs and pricing will be confirmed on the show floor.
