The second generation of the Audi A6 was, in fact, the first true A6 and not a re-badged Audi 100, as its predecessor. It was launched in 1997 and it was a big leap over the previous generation.

When Audi decided to make a shift in its car's nameplates, it didn't start with completely new vehicles but with facelifted ones such as the 1994 A6, which was a refreshed Audi 100 (Audi 5000 in the U.S.).
