Audi's new A6L for China measures 5,142 mm long on a 3,066 mm wheelbase. That wheelbase is 68 mm longer than the standard A8. The starting price: 323,000 yuan ($47,000), which is $15,300 less than the car it replaces and $17,100 below the entry-level A6 in North America.
The math tells the story of Audi's position in China. Intense competition from domestic manufacturers has compressed pricing to a point where a near-A8-sized sedan starts below $50,000.
Three Powertrains
The base engine is a mild-hybrid turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 201 hp (150 kW) with front-wheel drive through a seven-speed dual-clutch. The mid-range variant bumps the same engine to 268 hp (200 kW), adds a 24 hp (18 kW) electric motor, and pairs it with quattro AWD. The flagship runs a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 at 362 hp (270 kW) with the same 24 hp electric motor and quattro, topping out at 436,000 yuan ($63,400).
Optional all-wheel steering reduces the turning radius. Air suspension adjusts ride height by 30 mm.
Huawei Inside
The A6L integrates Huawei Qiankun Intelligent Driving technology across 33 sensors, including dual LiDAR units. Twenty-eight ADAS functions are available. The infotainment stack includes a 14.5-inch center display, 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a front-passenger screen, and a large head-up display. A 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen system handles audio.
The rear cabin, which is the entire point of the L suffix, features China-exclusive seats designed for long-distance travel. A panoramic roof spanning 1.96 square meters contains 112 RGB LEDs for ambient lighting.
The A8 Comparison
The A6L's 3,066 mm wheelbase sits between the A8 (2,998 mm) and A8L (3,128 mm). At less than half the A8L's base price of 789,800 yuan ($114,900), the A6L offers most of the rear-seat real estate without the flagship tax. An A7L long-wheelbase wagon variant is expected to follow. Manufactured by the FAW-Audi joint venture, the A6L stays in China with no announced export plans.
