BYD's Hong Kong-listed shares surged 7.8% on Monday, the largest single-day gain in 13 months, after reports of 100,000 vehicle orders from Argentina (50,000) and Mexico (50,000). The stock led the Hang Seng Tech Index. Xiaomi rose 5.64% and NIO climbed 5% in a broader China EV rally.

The orders were reported by Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao, citing Reuters and BYD executive Stella Li.

Brazil Scale

BYD's Brazil plant currently handles 150,000 vehicles annually, with a phased expansion target of 600,000 units. A research center in Rio de Janeiro, backed by a 300 million reais ($58.2 million) investment, begins construction in 2026 and is expected to complete by 2028.

The Latin American Math

BYD's 2026 overseas sales target is 1.3 million vehicles. The first two months of 2026 saw NEV sales of 400,241 units, down 36% year-over-year due to seasonal factors. The 100,000-unit order block from two Latin American markets represents meaningful progress toward the overseas target and validates the Brazil manufacturing investment.

Argentina and Mexico present different market dynamics: Argentina for domestic demand, Mexico as both a domestic market and a potential gateway to North American supply chains. BYD's willingness to commit production capacity in Brazil for Latin American distribution suggests long-term regional ambitions beyond opportunistic export sales.
