BYD is exploring entry into Formula One and endurance racing, according to Bloomberg. The options range from the World Endurance Championship (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans) to F1, either by building a new team or acquiring an existing one.

The ambition isn't purely aspirational. BYD has motorsport credentials to point to: the Yangwang U9 Xtreme lapped the Nürburgring in 6:59.157 in September 2025, becoming the first pure-electric production vehicle to break the 7-minute mark. The test car ran four electric motors with combined output exceeding 3,000 PS. In August 2025, BYD set the global EV top speed record at 472.41 km/h.

The F1 Cost Problem

An F1 campaign can cost up to $500 million per season. For context, BYD's entire NEV export operation shipped 100,600 units in February 2026 alone. The financial capacity exists. The question is whether the brand-building return justifies the investment versus spending the same amount on manufacturing expansion and charging infrastructure.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has previously stated that a Chinese team would be "the next logical step for F1." The 2026 season introduces new hybrid power rules with increased battery capacity, which could provide a more natural entry point for an EV-focused manufacturer.

This would represent the first direct attempt by a Chinese manufacturer to compete in a sport historically dominated by European and American teams. Whether BYD pursues F1 or the more cost-effective WEC route will likely depend on which series offers better brand visibility in BYD's target export markets.
