Honda is bringing the Insight nameplate back as a China-built electric sedan for the Japanese market. The car is actually the e:NS2, co-developed with Dongfeng, rebadged for a market where EVs account for less than 2% of new car sales.
A front-mounted electric motor produces 201 hp, fed by a 68.8 kWh CATL battery pack on the e:N Architecture F platform. Range is 311 miles under WLTC Japanese testing standards (339 miles CLTC). For the small but growing Japanese EV market, where most electric vehicles are kei-class minicars like Honda's own N-One e: and N-Van e:, the Insight offers a full-size alternative.
Specification
LED headlights with an illuminated Honda badge, flush door handles, and 18-inch wheels handle the exterior. Inside: a large central infotainment display, real leather seats, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a digital rearview mirror with dashcam, sunroof, and configurable ambient lighting.
Five drive modes are offered: Sport (with synthetic sound effects), Normal, Econ, Snow, and an Agile Handling Assist system.
The Math
Honda plans to sell 3,000 units annually in Japan. That's a modest target, but it reflects the reality of Japanese EV adoption. The Insight isn't designed to convert the market. It exists so Honda has an EV option for the small number of Japanese buyers who want one, without developing a Japan-specific model.
The e:NS2 underperformed in China. Exporting it to Japan recycles the investment across a second market and keeps the Insight name alive, which has brand value going back to 1999. Reservations open March 19, 2026. Pricing hasn't been announced. The Insight remains exclusive to Japan with no plans for the American market.
