MG's first seven-seat SUV starts at £34,205 in the UK, undercutting the Volkswagen Tayron by over £10,000 and the Skoda Kodiaq PHEV by £8,000. The S9 (sold as QS in Australia, Roewe RX-9 in China) makes its pricing the lead argument.

The SUV stretches to approximately 5 meters (197 inches), making it 13 inches longer than the MG HS PHEV. A 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine pairs with an electric motor and a 23.2 kWh usable battery for an estimated 295 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, based on the HS PHEV's shared powertrain. Electric-only range: 62 miles (100 km).

Space and Specification

Boot space measures 332 liters with all three rows up, expanding past 1,000 liters with the third row folded. For a seven-seater, 332 liters is workable for daily use but tight for family road trips with full passenger load.

Standard equipment includes twin digital screens under a shared glass panel, a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, and heated, ventilated, massaging front seats. Up to 16 driver-assistance systems are available, and the S9 carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

The VW Problem

At £34,205, the S9 forces a difficult conversation for Volkswagen. The Tayron starts above £44,000 in the UK. The Skoda Kodiaq PHEV sits around £42,000. Neither offers significantly more interior space or meaningfully better powertrain specifications. The badge premium that European manufacturers rely on faces direct pressure when the price gap exceeds £10,000 and the spec sheet is comparable.

MG's volume play in Europe has followed a consistent pattern: launch at an aggressive price, pack in features, and let the value proposition do the selling. The S9 continues that formula in the seven-seat PHEV segment where European incumbents have left a pricing gap wide enough to drive a five-meter SUV through.
