Mobil 1 Colors Return to a Porsche Factory Prototype
Porsche Penske Motorsport will run both 963 hybrid prototypes in a special Mobil 1 livery at the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 21, 2026. Blue and red accents on a white base. The design is a deliberate callback to a partnership that started 30 years ago at Le Mans.
The timing is strategic. Porsche leads both the drivers' and manufacturers' championships in the FIA World Endurance Championship after winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January. The 1996 Connection
The Mobil 1 livery first appeared on two Porsche 911 GT1 factory entries at Le Mans in 1996. Those cars finished second and third overall. The partnership continued through the 919 Hybrid era, where Porsche collected six world championship titles and three consecutive Le Mans victories between 2014 and 2017.
Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport, framed it as trust built through results. Thirty years of shared data on lubricant performance under racing conditions is not a sponsorship deal. It is an engineering relationship. ExxonMobil's formulations run in the 963's twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 hybrid powertrain, and the feedback loop between track performance and product development is the part neither company talks about publicly but both value most.
🏁 Car #7 Leads the Title Fight
The championship-leading Car #7 carries Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich. Nasr brings IMSA experience and won the 2024 Daytona 24 outright. Andlauer has been consistently quick across WEC and IMSA programs. Heinrich, the 2022 Porsche Supercup champion, adds single-make precision to an endurance lineup.
Car #6 fields the established trio of Kévin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, and Matt Campbell. Estre is a two-time Le Mans class winner. Vanthoor won the 2023 IMSA GTD Pro championship. Campbell has been part of Porsche's factory program since 2018 and knows Sebring's concrete surface and its destructive effect on tires as well as anyone on the grid.
Sebring's Specific Challenge
The 12 Hours of Sebring runs on a converted World War II airfield. The concrete surface is abrasive, bumpy, and unforgiving on suspension components. Ambient temperatures in central Florida in March routinely exceed 30 degrees Celsius during the day and drop below 15 at night, forcing teams to manage a thermal window that shifts dramatically across the 12-hour distance.
For the 963's hybrid system, Sebring presents a different energy recovery profile than Daytona or Le Mans. The shorter straights and more frequent braking zones mean the MGU (motor-generator unit) cycles more often but recovers less energy per deployment. Teams that optimize hybrid strategy for Sebring's specific layout gain time not through raw speed but through consistent energy deployment across stints.
What Three Decades of Data Buy
The Mobil 1 partnership is not about the livery. It is about 30 years of oil temperature data, bearing wear analysis, and lubricant degradation curves collected under the most extreme conditions production-derived engines face. The 963's 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 operates at sustained loads that no road car engine will ever see. The lubricant formulations developed for this application filter down into consumer products, and the racing program generates validation data that would take decades to accumulate through standard testing.
