Pontiac took its name from the city of Pontiac, Michigan, where Edward M. Murphy founded the Pontiac Buggy Company in 1893 to manufacture horse-drawn carriages. As the automobile age began to take shape, Murphy recognized the opportunity to move into motorized transport.
