BMW launched the i3 Long Wheelbase and iX3 Long Wheelbase at the Beijing Auto Show, marking the Neue Klasse era's official start in the brand's largest single market. Both run on BMW's new dedicated EV architecture, the same underpinning as their European counterparts, but stretched for Chinese buyer preferences, and fitted with a door handle design that turns out to carry more significance than a styling detail.
Over 1,000 km of CLTC range. Under 440 miles EPA for the shorter car. The gap between those figures is not a unit conversion. It is a test cycle.
The Handle Story
The i3L and iX3L use semi-recessed, conventional pull handles instead of the flush pop-out units that appear on European and North American Neue Klasse models. BMW made the change in response to growing scrutiny in China following accidents where retractable handles reportedly prevented occupants from exiting damaged vehicles. NHTSA opened a separate investigation into Tesla Model Y pop-out handles in the US after reports of children trapped inside after power failures. The Chinese market's adoption of conventional handles is a response to an established safety concern, not an aesthetic preference.
Dimensions, Powertrain, and Range Claims
The iX3L gains 108 mm (4.25 in) of wheelbase over the Western iX3, reaching 3,005 mm (118.3 in), comparable to an X5. BMW has not confirmed the i3L's wheelbase extension. Both models retain the 800V architecture and up to 400 kW DC fast charging from their global equivalents.
The iX3 50L xDrive is rated at 463 hp (345 kW) and 476 lb-ft (645 Nm). CLTC range claims are 900+ km (559 miles) for the iX3L and 1,000+ km (621 miles) for the i3L. For comparison, North American EPA ratings for the shorter Western models are 400 miles (iX3) and 440 miles (i3). CLTC-to-real-world conversions typically run 30-40% lower.
