The Fiat Grande Panda Hybrid does something increasingly rare in the European market: it exists at a price that normal people can afford. The mild-hybrid version pairs a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with a 0.9 kWh battery and six-speed eDCT automatic, producing 109 hp and 205 Nm. Starting price for the gasoline manual is 16,990 euros. The mild-hybrid automatic tested here costs 21,077 euros.
At 3,999 mm long on a 2,540 mm wheelbase, this is a proper small car. Not a crossover pretending to be small. The Grande Panda sits on Stellantis's Smart Car platform, shared with the Citroen C3, C3 Aircross, and Opel Frontera. Boot space is 412 liters. Curb weight lands at 1,347 kg. The 0-62 sprint takes 10 seconds flat, with a top speed of 99 mph. These are not exciting numbers. They're honest ones.
What the Money Buys
The La Prima trim at 24,677 euros adds everything most buyers would want without tipping into overpriced territory. Fuel consumption sits at 6.5 liters per 100 km (36 mpg), which is competitive for a car this cheap. The six-speed eDCT is smoother than the dual-clutch units in the segment tend to be, and the three-cylinder doesn't intrude into the cabin the way some turbocharged triples do at highway speed.
A fully electric version exists too, starting at 28,877 euros for the La Prima trim. The EV shares the same body and platform but with a completely different powertrain. An AWD variant is planned for future release.
The Market This Car Lives In
The Grande Panda competes against the Dacia Sandero Stepway, Citroen C3, Seat Ibiza, Skoda Fabia, and Kia Stonic. Most of those are either more expensive or less interesting. The Sandero is cheaper but less refined. The C3 shares the platform but costs more in comparable trim.
Fiat positioned this car below the original Panda (now called Pandina), which continues in production. The naming is confusing, but the product isn't. The Grande Panda Hybrid is a budget hatchback that doesn't feel like a punishment, and that's enough to make it one of the more relevant European launches of the year. Deliveries are ongoing across European markets.
