GWM has updated the Tank 700 for 2026, unveiled ahead of the Beijing Auto Show. The headline on the flagship Hi4-Z variant is 864 hp from a plug-in hybrid system, nearly as much as a Lamborghini Temerario, in a body that references the Mercedes-Benz G-Class without entirely committing to it.
864 hp and 5.6 seconds to 100 km/h is not a contradiction. It is a mass estimate.
How 864 HP Is Built
Three power sources combine to produce the figure. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder contributes 248 hp. An electric motor integrated into the transmission adds 288 hp. A rear-mounted electric motor delivers 322 hp. Total system output: 864 hp. The plug-in hybrid system includes a 56.095 kWh battery pack with a claimed all-electric range of 190 km (118 miles).
In hybrid mode with a charged battery, GWM quotes fuel consumption of 1.16 l/100 km (approximately 203 mpg US), the figure generated by the NEDC-adjacent Chinese test cycle, not a real-world number. With a depleted battery, consumption rises to 8.45 l/100 km (27.8 mpg US), which is the figure more relevant to buyers who don't charge daily.
GWM has not released curb weight, but a large body-on-frame plug-in hybrid with three drive units and a 56 kWh pack does not arrive at modest mass figures. The 5.6-second 0-100 time is consistent with that reality: roughly equivalent to a conventional hot hatch, and considerably slower than what 864 hp suggests to anyone unfamiliar with how physics works at scale.
The Off-Road Variant
A second derivative, the Hi4-T, replaces the 2.0T with a 3.0-liter V6 producing 355 hp, paired with a 174 hp electric motor and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The battery drops to 37.1 kWh. Front, center, and rear locking differentials are standard. That is the specification that distinguishes it as the serious off-road variant rather than the performance one. The Hi4-T also posts 5.6 seconds to 100 km/h, likely because the smaller battery and simpler layout reduces overall mass.
GWM has been selling the Tank 700 in China for two years. Pricing for the updated 2026 model has not been announced.
